Disaster strikes

(September 24, 2011)

We have had a disastrous week. A fox upon finding he could not dig under our fence which went 18 ins into the ground managed to scale our 12 ft fence made of tennis court wire. All our ex battery chickens were killed along with 3 ducks, 3 cockerels and our turkey. The 2 peacocks managed to fly off and were brought back later and the geese had protected most of the ducks who remain glued to them. It was utter carnage so the enclosure is now swathed in highly charged electric fencing to ensure it does not happen again. One of our poultry experts shook his head in disbelief and said he could never have imagined a fox could climb a fence that high. The enclosure is now sadly rather quiet and all the birds- some survivors still on antibiotics -will take time to recover.

On the fund-raising front with a bad winter forecast we desperately need wood or donations for wood to make all the animal houses weather worthy. Th new micropigs which are anything but micro desperately need a bigger hut or shed as we were not expecting them to be so large.
